The Spinning Spoke Cycle Hub

On the corner of Seminary and Tennessee sits an old building that has been given new life with a local business that strives to leave a lasting legacy. The Spinning Spoke Cycle Hub, which opened its doors in July of 2014 was created by Timothy Wakefield, an avid cyclist and runner. As he planned his business the year prior to opening he knew he wanted to be a part of the flourishing downtown Florence community and contribute to The Shoals area. Over the short time that the shop has been open it has gained a reputation for being friendly, personable, and helpful to both serious cyclists and those just beginning to discover the benefits of biking. Where many people were traveling to Birmingham and Huntsville to have their bikes serviced and repaired, Spinning Spoke has filled a need for those who love cycling and has brought a fitness focus to downtown Florence by selling top of the line bikes, apparel, and equipment.

18 months later, as they prepare to celebrate two years of involvement in The Shoals, they have certainly established themselves as a shop that values customer service and have created a space that is welcoming and inspiring—a refreshing restoration to a timeworn building. The tall, tin-embossed ceilings are painted white, parallel to the restored, original hardwood floors lit by modern lighting. The clean, white walls make an ideal backdrop to the brightly painted bikes, colorful accessories, and riding apparel hanging on racks in shades of electric hues. There is a contagious energy in the back of the store as staff are busy working on bikes that have been brought in to be serviced.

There is an attitude of adventure and an invitation to join in alongside people who are passionate about biking and fitness. Spinning Spoke offers top of the line Trek bicycles—including the Electra cruiser and townie bikes, which are popular due to their stylish, high quality design and affordability. You will also find riding apparel and accessories, t-shirts, helmets, pedals, lights, pumps, nutritional supplements, and more. When purchasing a bicycle it automatically comes with a free tune up and a lifetime warranty on the frames. The staff is down to earth—a welcoming place where anyone can walk in and feel at home, ask questions, or just browse for fun. In addition, if you don’t own a bike or you are visiting from out of town, you can rent one for $7.50 an hour or $20 a day, or $35 dollars a day for road bikes—with special discount prices for rentals reserved for a week or more. Helmets are also available to rent and employees are happy to provide mapped routes through town, Natchez Trace, Wildwood Park, or any of the scenic county roads in the surrounding area.

The shop is accommodating in every way, including providing excellent bikes for children. This unique store is passionate about seeing kids stay active and healthy throughout their life and own a bike that fits them well. The youth bikes sold at Spinning Spoke are more durable and weigh less, and after your child grows out of their bike you can return it to the store in any condition and the next size bike is 80% off. Old bicycles brought back to the store are donated to Haiti Bike Share thru The 610 Project and Spinning Spoke provides all the parts and labor. After being repaired the bikes are shipped to schools in Haiti to be distributed to kids in need. So far they have helped send out 30 bikes in 6 months to both children and adults, and are preparing to send out even more.

This is the heart of The Spinning Spoke Cycle Hub—a thoughtful, kind and generous staff who genuinely desire to serve and care for The Shoals community by providing incredible bikes and the friendliest, highest quality service. The family-owned shop around the corner finds joy in serving anyone and everyone, whether you’re an expert cyclist or it’s your first time picking out a bike, they are happy to help you reach your fitness goals. The Spinning Spoke is leaving a lasting legacy as they strive to help others locally and around the world—if you are looking for ways to start the new year off with a healthy, positive mindset, partner alongside this remarkable store and be a part of the amazing Shoals community.
